Sunday, 7 April 2013 National Final in Birmingham

Kent gains two National Champions at the Sportshall National Final in Birmingham.

Sunday 7th April the under 15 girls Kent team arrived at the LG Arena, Birmingham at 12noon on a chilly Sunday morning to compete in the UK Finals of National Sportshall. The team consisted of 6 girls from 3 Athletic clubs in Kent from Ashford AC Rhiannon Wallwork, Pippi Randell and Charlotte Tappenden. Bexley AC ‘s Joanne Okusanya and finally from Thanet AC Diana Adegoke and Alice Fox. This being the last Sportshall competition for 5 of the girls to be able to compete in, with the exception of Alice Fox. The rest of the team has represented Kent for the last 3 years at the finals and has done very well. In last year’s final the U/15 girls finished 3rd and this year they may have been disappointed to have only got 5th place. Injuries to Hannah Owen (Ashford A.C) and substitute Corrine Wake-Smith (Invicta), meant that we didn't have any reserve to cover illness, injury or lack of form. Although this team result should not be a reflection on many individual girls who performed to an exceptionally high standard and should be proud of their results and efforts.

Joanne Okusanya was Kent's leading scorer finishing on 277 pts, finishing 4th overall out of 75 competitors, only 3pts of 3rd place and 10pts short of 1st. She won bronze in the Shot with a putt of 9.80m and in the Vertical Jump a height of 66cm (3cm better than last year final) gained Gold in joint 1st place.

Diana Adegoke (Thanet) was another of Kent's medal winners, an exceptionally good standing long jump of 2.62m won 1st place (improvement of 7cm on last year final ) to retain her title of Sportshall National Champion. A time of 22.0s in the 2 lap race gained equal first place and another gold medal.

Rhiannon Wallwork (Ashford) was the other Kent girl to gain a medal, coming 3rd in in the standing long jump with a jump of 2.51m. After 2 no-throws in the shot, her last of 8.80m gain 84 points towards the team's overall score.

Charlotte Tappenden (Ashford) finished Kent's highest placed in the speed bounce and 12th overall with a score of 81 and valuable points were won when she ran the 4 lap in 51.7 seconds

Pippi Randall (Ashford) got the quickest time for Kent girls in the 4 lap (51.2) gaining 57 points towards the team and finished with 75 speed bounces, =22 place overall.

Alice Fox (Thanet) came 12th overall in the vertical jump attaining 55cm and gaining important 77 points for Kent along with 102 points from the shot and 2 lap race.

A big thank you to the Kent Team Managers Janet Duffin and Elizabeth Duffin who had a few sleepless nights trying to get a team in place and thanks to those tireless parents who gave their time and support to the girls.

Sunday, 9 February 2013 Regional Final: The Triangle Burgess Hill

Regional Sportshall Final Burgess Hill 9th February 2013
It was another exciting Sportshall Regional Final on Saturday at Burgess Hill. The U/15 girls were leading their competition until the last two relays. They finished just 9 points behind Hampshire and 1 point ahead of Berkshire. Although they did not qualify for the National Finals on the day there is still a good chance that they can claim runners up place on the 7th April at the NEC, Birmingham, but we will have to wait until after the Northern Final on the 9th March to find out. Diana Adegoke (Thanet A.C) finished in 2nd place overall for the all-rounder competition just 4 points behind the winner from Hampshire, with Rhiannon Wallwork (Ashford A.C) and Joanne Okusanya (Bexley A.C) tied for 3rd place 8 points behind, giving Kent 3 girls in the top 3 places.

Diana Adegoke kept up her domination of the Standing Long Jump after becoming National Champion in 2012. She won with 2.59m, Rhiannon Wallwork claimed 2nd place with 2.57m. Diana also won her 2 lap race. Rhiannon just missed out on a medal in her 4 lap race finishing 4th. Joanne Okusanya won the Vertical jump with 65cm and claimed 4th place in the Shot 9.06m. Alice Fox (Thanet A.C) was 5th in the Vertical Jump and 8th in the Shot. Charlotte Tappenden (Ashford A.C) was another medal winner in the U/15 girls with an excellent 2nd in the Speedbounce with 87 bounces. Hannah Owen (Ashford A.C) was the 6th member of the team, her best event the Speedbounce where she finished 11th with 78 bounces. Pippi Randell (Ashford A.C) ran a strong race in the 8 lap Paarlauf with Rhiannon but unfortunately they could only finish 3rd.

In the U/15 boys Camron Lyttle (Bexley A.C) in his first year in this age group won two medals, Silver in the Standing Long Jump with 2.61m just 3cm away from Gold. In the 2 Lap race Camron would have won but a stumble as he reached the line cost him the race, his dramatic dive across the line kept him in the medals with silver. The only other medallist was Alex Lynch (Ashford A.C) who putt the Shot 10.03m to win Silver. Ben Isaac (Ashford A.C) unfortunately could only make 4th place in the Standing Triple Jump with 8.01m. Cameron Amedee’s (Ashford A.C) best result came in the same event where he finished 6th with 7.58m. Kyle Denning (Ashford A.C) also in the Standing Triple Jump finished in 10th place with 7.20m. Robert Latchford (Paddock Wood A.C) stood in at the last minute when another member of the team was unable to come. Robert had to compete in events that he doesn’t normally do, like the Shot Putt where he actually claimed a PB. He finished 11th in the Standing Long Jump 2.36m. Marcus Epps (Sittingbourne Community College) teamed up with Alex Lynch for the 8 Lap Paarlauf to finish 5th. The team came 4th on the day behind very strong teams from Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex. In the All-rounder competition Camron Lyttle came 9th, Ben Isaac 13th, Cameron Amedee 15th, Alex Lynch 20th, Kyle Denning 33rd, Robert Latchford 37th.

The U/13 boys finished 5th in their competition winning 4 medals. George Maher (Ashford A.C) won a Silver medal in the Standing Triple Jump 7.02m and finished 7th in the 2 Lap race after qualifying for the final. Leon King (Thanet A.C) came 2nd in the Standing Long Jump 2.37m. Jason Okusanya (Bexley A.C) following in the steps of his sister won a Bronze medal in the Shot Putt with 8.92m. James O’Gorman (Paddock Wood A.C) surprised himself jumping a PB in the Speed Bounce to win a Silver medal with 83 bounces. Kian Crawford (Ashford A.C) came 6th in the event with 75. Harry Pitman (Ashford A.C) made the final of the 4 Lap race and came 7th, he just missed out on a medal in the Vertical Jump coming 4th with 55 cm just 1cm behind the Bronze medal winner. Kieran Friar (Swale Combined) was just another centimetre down to come 5th. Due to a Hampshire athlete breaking their wrist in the High Jump the whole event was cancelled due to the ambulance taking over an hour and twenty minutes to arrive, so Jake Timmins (Ashford A.C) and Sam Dawson–Dale (Invicta East Kent) did not get a chance to finish their competition and missed out on the chance of a medal. Mathew Cranfield (Ashford A.C), Harry Lutz (Thanet A.C) and Ellis Bennett (Ashford A.C) made up the rest of the team.

The U/13 girls only won 3 medals as it was a very strong competition this year. Jaimee-Ann Heyes (Ashford A.C) and Alexandra Pickett (Ashford A.C) tied for 1st place in the Speed Bounce with 84 bounces. Rebecca Hawkins (Bexley A.C) won the Vertical Jump with 60cm. Natasha Scott (Medway& Maidstone) missed out on a medal by 4cm in the Standing Triple Jump. Maddy Johnson (Thanet A.C) also came close to a medal in the Shot Putt coming 4th with 9.04m. Emilia Isaac (Ashford A.C) came 6th in the event 8.37m. Omega Skeen (Thanet A.C) made the final of the 4 lap race finishing 7th; she was 5th in the Standing Triple Jump 6.48m. Emily Higham (Invicta East Kent) and Faith Etokowo (Ashford A.C) covered the High Jump. Naomi Hawkins (Invicta East Kent) jumped 52cm in the Vertical Jump to finish 6th. Faith Cox (Ashford A.C) and Jasmin Okoye (Bexley A.C) completed the team which finished 6th overall.

A big thank you to everyone who officiated from Kent on the day and especially to Tina Heyes who stepped in to time keep (as both official timekeepers were ill) otherwise there would have been no races, also to all the parents for getting the athletes there and coping with the horrendous parking at Burgess Hill.

Information and an entry form for a new Kent U11 Sportshall Athletics Decathlon, hosted and organised by Ashford Leisure Trust on behalf of the Kent County Athletic Association (KCAA) with support from Thanet Athletics Club, at the Stour Centre, Ashford on Sunday 25th November.

This is a new event in the Sportshall Athletics calendar and we are confident it will be a great success and will become an annual event. The Decathlon is open to boys and girls in school Years 5 and 6 from clubs and schools in Kent. Athletes will do all 10 events – Balance Test, Standing Long Jump, Speed Bounce, Target Throw, Hi-Stepper, Chest Push, Vertical Jump, 10 x 10m Shuttle Run, Soft Javelin, Standing Triple Jump – and points will be awarded for performance in each event. Medals, sponsored by Ashford Leisure Trust, will be presented to the three boys and three girls with the highest points scores at the end of the competition.

The Kent U11 Sportshall Decathlon will also serve as the trials from which the Kent team for the Aviva Fun in Athletics Festival in West Sussex in January will be selected. The top 15 boys and girls from the Decathlon will be invited to a further training session on Sunday 16th December. Further information is on the form.

Trials have previously been held over several weekends, at Aylesford Sports College for many years and last year by Thanet Athletics Club. We have developed this new format to reduce the time commitment and travelling for athletes and parents, but the Decathlon format will ensure that the very best are still selected to represent Kent.

Please distribute this information and the entry form to talented athletes in Years 5 and 6 at your clubs and schools.

Please contact me on the numbers below if you have any questions, or Pete Le Rossignol on 01233 667125 (office hours).
