Section B Chairman's Report to last
A.G.M. 25-11-02
KENT COUNTY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHAIRMAN’S REPORT FOR YEAR 2001/2002 The successes of previous years have once again continued. At last winters Cross Country UK Championships we were one of the eight counties to have teams in every event. Our best women’s team was the under 20, finishing first and supplying the individual winner, Charlotte Dale; our best men’s team was the under 17, finishing third, with their best runner, Olly Freeman, finishing fourth as did our under 13 girl Rebecca Taylor. In the S.E.A.A. Inter County Cross Country our under 17 girls were second, with Jenny Pereira sixth, our under 13 girls second with Rebecca Taylor second, our under 17 boys third with Dean Lacy seventh. During the summer we had S.E.A.A. Inter County matches for every age group and did very well, at senior level we won against seven other counties, both men and women, the first time Kent have scored this double. At under 20 we won both men’s and women’s events from nineteen other counties. At u17 the men were second of eight counties but the women were again first. At under 15 both men and women were first of nineteen counties and at under 13 the boys were sixth of fourteen counties and the girls third. In all these matches we had thirty individual male and twenty-nine female winners. Mention must also be made of team managers, Mike Paul and Carl Foster for the women, Vic Smith, Brian Fagg and Derek Garrard for the men, who got our individuals to the events and organised them there to such effective teams. I imagine many of you will have watched our Kent athletes performing on the international scene, led I suppose by Steve Backley and Kelly Holmes but all producing very good performances to make the teams and then to perform. Some have been around for a few years, some are very recent additions who we look forward to achieving greater things in the future. So well done Steve and Kelly, but also well done Anthony Whiteman, Allen and Andy Graffin, Mark Steinle, Charlotte Dale and Lisa Dobriskey, and well done to all the other Kent athletes. Our thanks go too, to those who serve on the various sub-committees who arrange and organise our various championships and to all who officiate at these events for the County. Remember we start our year with the Veterans Cross Country Championships, move on to the senior through to under 13 event. Next we squeezed in our Indoor track and field championships for all age groups. then came the Individual track and field championships, for seniors through to under 15’s, then the under 13 events where we include an under 15 schools competition. These were followed by the track Relays championships, followed by the Combined Events championships which are mixed with the Veteran track and field championships. We think we have the mix right, but we can never please everyone with the dates we utilise. Sorry to those we upset but some dates we are given from above, some we squeeze in as best we can at where we believe they will be most popular and avoid most other events! I suppose in the lat paragraph I have concentrated on what we regard as our “main events”, but we also provide county championship events for all ages of walkers. They too have their successes against other counties. And then there is road running, numerically probably as big as cross country and track and field. Here we not only hold championships at the various distances, including a relay event for all ages, but also for seniors, including veteran runners, we hold a Grand Prix series over the whole year for both individuals and teams. In these events we are indebted to the race organising committees who organise the various events and all their many helpers of all sorts, and to Rob Bright for keeping track of the Grand Prix as well as sorting out the championship results. In this past year our Sportshall events were again successful, and continued to grow in stature. Again these events depend very much on the contributions made by the officials who attend them. Indeed the county is very lucky to have such a strong team of officials who turn out so regularly throughout the County, often working both days at weekends and we in the Executive Committee thank them all for their skill and devotion to athletics. Many of them are also in demand by the S.E.A.A and even UK Athletics as well as for us. Though not that sort of official, I would also like to thank Marjorie Sawyer for her work ensuring that trophies and medals are available for presentation at all our Championships, and if you don’t understand why I single her out just try to count the number of medals and trophies she deals with each year, on track, on field, over cross country and on the roads. We are very fortunate to have Chris Newman in the county and that he is willing to give up so much of his time to arranging for new coaches to be brought in and to attend courses, and for coaches and athletes to meet. He ensures that anyone finishing in the first three in a county championship, or who betters a third place performance, or any Kent athlete who represents Kent or London at English Schools Championships at under 15 and under 17 receive invitations to join Winter Coaching Squads on several occasions through the winter. He has however a major problem in that UKA will not give him any information about those transferring from the old coaching scheme to the new one, nor of those just starting the new one. He has written to all club secretaries for that information about any coach they know and in that way is gradually piecing together a full list of active coaches in this associations area. Each year he organises a Coaches Forum, which are very useful to those who attend them, but they are only reasonably supported when they should be excellently supported. An Athletic Academy is now running at the new track at Canterbury High School with 15 attending. Further away from athletes is the Development sub-committee, but here too the need of athletes is the prominent feature. Our County Development Plan was revised in 2001 and was published early in 2002. This Plan in fact is a collection of plans for competition, coaching, schools, officials, facilities, clubs and communication. The Plan can be found, with much else of interest in Kent Athletics, on our website http://www.kcaa.org.uk which started under a similar name and changed from that to the present back in August/September. It still has the same objective and seems to be well received by the athletics world in Kent. If you have anything of general athletic interest in Kent do e-mail it to the webmaster (or myself at kcaa@ukonline.co.uk ). Active Sport is a multi-sport initiative, initially for a five year period, coming to us from Sport England, but don’t let that put you off. It aims to provide a pathway of coaching and general support to young athletes from pre-club activity into club activity and even up to readiness for county squad membership. As a county we have entered into this scheme and already the PADO (Partnership Athletics Development Officer) for Kent has been appointed effectively by Sport England who will pay him, and his expenses, and also for training and services of coaches, officials, volunteers and clubs OPERATING THE SCHEME. You will be pleased to know that the PADO is our own Chris Bowman, in whom we already had every confidence before any appointment was made. The funding is in excess of £100,000 over the initial five years. Kent Sports Development Unit have continued to work with us, with a modest, but none the less welcome, grant to support, in part, our development. The track at Canterbury is now up and running and at last Maidstone Council is involved with obtaining a track in Maidstone. This looks like being ready about 2005/6. Also a training track with field event facilities is in the process of being planned in Thanet, which we find most encouraging in that part of the county. There is one aspect of our activity where we have been unable to find anyone from the sport to help us. Press and publicity. We have, with help from the KSDU, been advertising on our own behalf and that of the clubs in Volunteer Bureaus throughout Kent for volunteers and, I must confess much to my great surprise, we have received three offers. One was more appropriately for a club to use at matches and has been passed to her nearest club, but the other two were both in the press/publicity area. One is acting as Newsletter editor and is currently working to produce the next one, the other is acting as our contact with the press and has already had some work published, though as you know that is a more localised product. We look forward to these two developing and suggest to clubs they use volunteer bureau to try to boost their corps of helpers. Certainly you may ask for my help if you are thinking of going along this path, though I have informed all club secretaries and some may well be doing something. Finally I would like to thank all who give of their time and energy to help the athletes of Kent enjoy the sport, especially during the past year but generally as well. Sadly this year we have seen the death of two of our Executive committee members. Maggy Forman and Ron Sawyer, both of whom did a great deal for Kent athletics, not only while on that committee but in the years preceding that. They have both been missed and will no doubt continue to be. Maggy’s husband Dave has volunteered to take over, today, as the secretary of the association, and I’m sure he will receive your help to settle into the many, and varied, ways of the association. Also more recently Tony James well known and respected through the county for his coaching, but also a very helpful person behind the scenes at county championships, sadly died in the autumn. If I have omitted anything of particular interest to anyone I apologise, and perhaps they will let me know. KENT COUNTY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
